Diagnostiquer, décrypter et domestiquer les passions de l'âme : telle est l'obsession des médecins, des lettrés, des théologiens, des ambassadeurs, des hommes d'Eglise et d'Etat du premier XVIIe siècle (1610-1659). La hantise d'une reprise des guerres civiles, après un demi-siècle de déchirements, explique la naissance d'une science et d'une anthropologie nouvelles des passions. Dans ce contexte d'après-guerre, un véritable langage des passions se développe dans ce premier zen' siècle pour penser et panser la violence.
La haine est identifiée comme l'origine de la violence fratricide dans la cité. De la régence de Marie de Médicis aux ministériats cardinaux de Richelieu puis de Mazarin, une science politique des passions justifie un nouvel art de gouverner, celui d'un Prince de raison capable de canaliser les passions populaires. Une passion d'Etat s'affirme également à travers les régimes émotionnels impulsés par les campagnes de presse contre les étrangers — Italiens, Anglais, Turcs ou Espagnols — assimilés à des ennemis d'Etat.
Capables de générer une émotion voire une haine publique, telle la xénophobie, les médias constituent un nouvel outil politique, redoutable et redouté. La question du contrôle de l'émotion publique, plus que de l'opinion publique, occupe de fait une place de plus en plus stratégique dans l'Etat moderne. Les Raisons de la haine examinent les sciences mécaniques et politiques des passions, leur usage, leur instrumentalisation et leur domestication.
Tout l'enjeu est d'éclairer les rouages de cette fabrique publique de la haine et de cette communauté émotionnelle de l'odieux dans la société du XVIIe siècle. Une invitation, finalement, à regarder autrement l'emprise et l'empire des passions dans notre représentation souvent déformée et stéréotypée de l'autre.
